Diet No More!

Have you ever thought about why we are so fat? Do you think it is our sedentary consumer driven lifestyle that piles on the pounds? Or, is it more fundamental—something genetic perhaps? Either way, the unsolved medical mystery of obesity has been handed over to what I define as false promises—also know as “diet disasters”!

If you were to investigate who is being preyed upon by these diet disasters, you will quickly discover the numbers are alarming. First of all, more than half the United States is overweight. One-third of all middle-aged people are obese (double the rate of the 1970s) and the ranks of the grossly overweight, those for example who are too large to fit into an airline seat are up 350 percent in the past 30 years. With this said, it doesn’t take a scientist to figure out that no one wants to be fat. Unfortunately, there is an abundance of confusion surrounding the question to which approach to weight loss is best, and it is considered normal to go from one diet to another with little hope of one day “dieting no more”.

Well, I am happy to share with you that it does not have to be that way. You do not have to go from one diet to another. Enjoy a life free of dieting and make today the first day of a diet-free lifestyle. However, it does help to keep in mind what you’re against as you make the decision to diet no more. Case in point, in 1970, Americans spent $6 billion on fast food. In 2003, over $138 billion! At this very moment about 17 million Americans adhere to a low-carb eating regimen, such as the high-protein, high-fat Atkins diet. More people than ever are exercising and joining health clubs, and diet books remain on the national best seller list.

Knowing of these few facts puts things into perspective: There is no shortage of food to meet our high pressured, fast moving lifestyles; statistics and television commercials confirm the low-carb movement; and book sales demonstrate the fact that people are eagerly in search for the solution to diet no more. Though apparent to many, I continue to be asked, “How can I lose weight and never be faced with dieting again?” In short, the answer isn’t more information, and this is what I would like to share with you—three essentials for permanent weight loss:

One: Support (i.e., friends, coach, group) from others. Having someone you can confide in, bounce things off and count on when you are feeling weak is not only a blessing, but also an outside source of strength. Your method of support can help you work through crisis when you are feeling overwhelmed. Your support lets you know that you are not alone, that there are others who understand what you are going through. Having a support also gives you hope that you can cope and start working through your emotions and feelings. Support groups for instance, help you to discuss your feelings and develop coping skills. Matter of fact, it can be easier to express exactly how you feel in a group than with family and/or friends.

Two: Consistent reinforcement. Having an outside source—someone you meet with once or twice per month who can objectively encourage you to resolve to evolve with your decision to diet no more. This person or group holds no judgments toward you or the actions you take, and inspires you to implement the ‘know how’ you possess to eat healthy, think positively and keep active.

Three: Coping skills to help you follow through with the promises you make to yourself. EXAMPLE: You make the decision to no longer eat fast food and upon visiting your mother-in-law she spends a significant amount of time to surprise you and caters what she remembers to be your favorite fast food. What do you do? Do you eat the fast food because you don’t want to offend her? Or, do you kindly thank her for the surprise and encourage others to eat it while you eat your chicken breast and salad? In a situation like this, most people sabotage their desire to eat healthy just to avoid hurting the feelings of others.

Coping skills can help you deal with situations of concern, anxiety and discomfort. However, there is no one coping skill that fits all situations, just knowing of its importance helps you take action toward its development.

Even if you’ve wrestled with dieting for a big part of your life, all is not lost. From this day forward I encourage you to reflect on your past and consider all that you have learned and experienced as practice for you to diet no more. To do this, the bottom line to releasing fat for the last time and moving into a diet-free lifestyle consist of three things: 1) What you eat; 2) How you think; and 3) How you move (exercise). The desire to go for another diet may be strong at times, but keep in mind that diets do not work long-term. What does work is your wanting to evolve with your life and that means asking yourself the following question each week: “What can I do or say (i.e., think, internal dialogue) differently that will help me evolve with my life in the areas of nutrition and exercise?” This one question can be the foundation to ensuring your success!
