There are some acid reflux foods to avoid if the problem of hyper acidity has to be successfully controlled. Since the body tends to accumulate acid, and turn more acidic over time, it is important to follow an alkaline diet which includes various green vegetables and fruits. Causes of Acid Reflux

Let us take a look at what, actually, causes acid reflux. Acid reflux, or GERD (GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease), is a condition in which the contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other problems. Normally, when food is eaten, it passes from the mouth, through the esophagus, into the stomach. A valve, made of muscle fibres, called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which closes the stomach from the esophagus, prevents the food from re-entering the esophagus. Sometimes, this valve is not developed properly, and does not close completely. In these circumstances, the food and stomach acid flow back into the esophagus. This condition is called ‘acid reflux’. This may cause uncomfortable symptoms, as well as damage to the esophagus, due to the acid, causing ulcers or even cancer.


Some common symptoms may be:

– Heartburn or pain in the chest area.
– Heaviness or bloating feeling in the stomach after eating.
– Feeling that food is stuck in the esophagus.
– Nausea after eating.
– An urge to keep burping or actually burping.
– Upper abdominal pain.

These symptoms tend to get worse when a person is lying down or during the nights.

Other, less common, symptoms may be:

– Persistent cough.
– Difficulty swallowing.
– Food regurgitation.
– Hiccups.
– Throat becoming hoarse.
– Wheezing or asthma like symptoms.
– Sore throat.

These symptoms may be reduced by doing a few simple things like:

– Not engaging in strenuous physical activities soon after eating.
– Not wearing anything tight around the waist.
– Eating at least two hours before bedtime.
– Eating small meals at frequent intervals, instead of one large meal at a time.
– Avoiding stress.
– Keeping body weight in check.
– Not smoking.
– Keeping the upper part of the body raised at 45 degrees while sleeping.

Prevention and Treatment

It is possible to prevent acid reflux by simply following a balanced alkaline diet. For more severe cases, medicines or surgery may be opted for. In fact, milder forms of acid reflux can be effectively controlled by just following a good, balanced alkaline diet and lifestyle. There are certain types of foods which trigger acid reflux. It helps to know what these foods are and try to avoid them. However, they should not be confused with foods that have alkaline properties, like lemons.

The acid reflux foods to avoid are alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, carbonated drinks, some citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, popcorn, high fat meat, spicy food, fatty food, mint, onion, or fried food. Instead, sticking to an alkaline food diet will not only help control acid reflux but will balance the entire pH level of the body for optimum health.
